Tukituki River Recovery Package
June 8, 2009
“I was thrilled to hear the recent announcement by the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council of the initiatives that will help restore Tukituki River water quality”, says Tukituki MP Craig Foss
“Since becoming a Member of Parliament I have been involved in discussions with the various parties working to put a stop to the declining health of the Tukituki River,’ said Mr Foss, “and I commend the decision to make sure that no effluent from Central Hawke’s Bay waste water system will be directly discharged into the river.”
“I have visited many of the sites along the river and seen where the Tukituki has visibly suffered and importantly where “Unsafe to Swim” signs have had to be erected. That is not the Hawke’s Bay that we expect. Well done to all concerned in finding this solution.” Said Mr Foss.
“The innovation surrounding the solution to Central Hawke’s Bay’s effluent problem is to be applauded,” adds Napier MP Chris Tremain “It is testament to the region’s Councils that the two parties, the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council and the Central Hawke’s Bay District Council, have worked together so well to provide an creative, timely and cost effective solution”.
Both the Central Hawke’s Bay District Council and the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council have devised a land treatment system using forestry for CHB’s wastewater disposal. This disposal process is used effectively in Rotorua; a city 10 times the size of the CHB urban area.
“I have to agree with both Councils when they describe the outcome as ‘win-win’,” says Mr Foss. “I am delighted at the outcome and am looking forward to watching the Tukituki recover.”
