Youth Programmes Applauded

‘Yesterday the Government announced a raft of programmes for the youth in our community,’ said Tukituki MP Craig Foss. ‘The programmes are wide ranging and designed to give assistance to our young people from across a wide spectrum, that is, those that are making a concerted effort to make the best out of their situation, to those youth that need much more guidance.’

‘While much focus has been on the development of the so called Boot Camps, the Fresh Start programme is designed to engage young offenders and show them there are better paths in life to take,’ said Napier MP Chris Tremain. ‘Fresh Start will target around 3000 young offenders however over 30,000 young people will be able to take advantage ofthe Prime Minister’s Youth Programme and Break Away Programme. We have a fantastic opportunity to help a large number of teenagers and I am sure our community will take advantage of this.

‘We are also thrilled that many high profile and well respected Kiwis have offered their time,’ said Mr Foss. ‘Actor Oscar Kightley and ex All Black Norm Hewitt are just two of the amazing people who have put their hands up. Role models are important for our young people and I want to thank those who are willing to fill the gaps in these teenagers lives.’

‘’Another important part of the package are the Respite Camps,’ says Mr Tremain. ‘Five hundred places will be offered to children who are being cared for by foster parents, extended whanau and grandparents. These camps are designed to give the caregivers a much needed break from what can be a tiring and in some instances an unexpected situation.’

These are exciting developments and both Chris and my self are looking forward to seeing them at work in our communities,’ added Mr Foss
